Hands-On Nature: Information and Activities for Exploring the Environment With Children
Published in Paperback by University Press of New England (October, 2000)
Authors: Jenepher Lingelbach, Lisa Purcell, and Susan Sawyer
Average review score:

If you like Project Wild you will love this book
Any Environmental Educator or Scout Leader who has ever gone to a program like Geosphere, Project Wild, NatureQuest or Project Learning Tree will LOVE this book.

Everything is organized by lessons and activities that are coded to match certain skills like Predation, Plant Succession, etc.

I have used this book for years at Boy Scout Summer Camps and I know the American Camping Association recommends this book for anyone involved in teaching Environmental Skills & Nature at a camp setting.

Perhaps the only draw back is the plain colorless sketches of the book. A teacher would appreciate the book's content but I would not get this book for a kid. Having said that, this book is a great pick for any leader, summer camp, or school where teaching an understanding & appreciation of nature is a priority.

Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer among the Indians: And Other Unfinished Stories
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (28 June, 2000)
Authors: Mark Twain, Walter Blair, and Dahlia Armon
Average review score:

interesting
This collection of unfinished stories was very interesting. It's very cool to know these unfinished tales. This product is not quite as good as the original Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer novels but is defenately a good collection. Some of the stories aren't as good as others but there are several that are very good.

I Wish I Had Known

what its like to have guidance from another dimension
A very interesting book about the difficulties and blessings
of being chosen to receive messages from the spiritual dimension.
Many people who are undergoing this same experience will find
the book a comfort and guide. Those who are not will still
find the journey fascinating.
This book is not an ego story, but has humility and
insights worth learning. I have had the pleasure of meeting
this author and she is very sincere.
My only problem with the book is the very small typeface.

The J. Alfred Prufrock Murders
Published in Hardcover by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (June, 1991)
Author: Corinne Holt Sawyer
Average review score:

Don't Let the Title Fool You!
This title was on my list of books to read for a long time before I ever got around to reading it. However, now that I have read it, I am sorry that I waited so long! Don't let the title keep you from reading this book.

The residents of a retirement community (not a nursing home!) have a murderer in their midst. No one really liked "Sweetie" but everyone agrees that there was no reason to kill her! Friends Caledonia and Angela mastermind the search to find the killer, and get themselves into a few precarious situations as a result. This book shows that retirement does not mean "out to pasture" and shows how valuable the elderly are (to those that, unfortunately, need a reminder!).

This was a delightful look at a feisty group of retirement residents that work together to help the police solve a murder. The characters grow with each book in the series and this book was a great introduction to them. Great for all ages! Enjoy!

Murder by Owl Light

Retired, Not Dead!
The 3rd book in the series about residents in a California retirement community. For seniors Angela and Caledonia, the murder of the gardener at posh Camden-sur-Mer is a delightful break in their routine!

The residents of a retirement community (not a nursing home!) have a murderer in their midst. Two murders happen quite closely together and no one sees a connection until a third happens. Angela is actually the one that helps the police find the connection and puts herself in danger with the real killer. This book's ending was a bit of a surprise and was genius the way it was put together.

This book shows that retirement does not mean "out to pasture" and shows how valuable the elderly are (to those that, unfortunately, need a reminder!). This was a delightful look at a feisty group of retirement residents that work together to help the police solve a murder. The characters grow with each book in the series and this book was a great addition to the first two. Great for all ages! The first book in this series is "The J Alfred Prufrock Murders". Enjoy!

Murder in Gray and White

A lively read!
The 2nd book in the "retirement" series. Two residents of a retirement community (not a nursing home!) work together with their friends and the police to solve another murder in their small community.

Friends Caledonia and Angela are featured more in this follow-up to "The J Alfred Prufrock Murders" and are assigned small tasks by the police to keep them out of the way. However, during their search, they once again put themselves in grave danger. While trying to solve the mystery, Angela and Caledonia also work hard to dry out an alcoholic in their midst for what they claim is his best interest. However, little do they know that he prefers to live out his final years in an alcoholic stupor.

This series shows that retirement does not mean "out to pasture" and shows how valuable the elderly are (to those that, unfortunately, need a reminder!). The characters grow with each book in the series and this book was another look at these delightful "people". Great for all ages! Enjoy!

No time for yesterday : Rich Vogler : his life, 1950-1990
Published in Hardcover by Carl Hungness Pub ()
Author: John Sawyer
Average review score:

A Diffinitive Work
John Sawyer left no stone unturned in this diffinitive work on the life of Rich Vogler. He captures the driven nature of Vogler's life and search for open wheel excellence. He successfully probes the aloof side of Vogler that so often left his fans and fellow competitors feeling estranged and mystefied. Vogler did special things in a race car, Sawyer has done special things with his pen. (And yes, the pictures alone are worth the price of the book - there are lots of good ones.) Whether you were a Vogler fan or are just an open wheel racing fan, this is a book you don't want to miss.

Sun Pin: Military Methods (History and Warfare)
Published in Hardcover by Westview Press (April, 1995)
Authors: Pin Sun, Mei-Chun Sawyer, Bin Sun, and Ralph D. Sawyer
Average review score:

Reading it is necessary to understand war.
Great book. It's full of valuable information and provides solid examples of what Sun-Tzu wrote about. The historical background that is given in the beginning is worth reading all by itself. It's also a really good translation. Some translators do more than just translating, and as a consequence they skew meanings left and right, leaving the book a poor mess. This is not the case here. The only drawback is the mass of notes. Most are only comments on why some character is interpreted one way or the other, and while that may be interesting for sinologists and linguists, it is merely burdensome for the reader interested in the military theory of the book. Some of the notes do also offer information not known to one unfamiliar with the period, and make the book that much better. Overall, if you want to read Sun Pin, read this translation. If you don't even know who Sun Pin is, read this book.

Zagatsurvey 2002/03 Atlanta Restaurants (Zagatsurvey: Atlanta Restaurants, 2002-2003)
Published in Paperback by Zagat Survey, LLC (April, 2002)
Authors: Shelley Skiles Sawyer, Sinting Lai, and Zagat Survey
Average review score:

This is a very good restaurant pocket guide.
Hundreds of Restaurants populate Atlanta. This compact guide is greatly needed to whittle down the selection. Often used to help select the best, I have found the Zagatsurvey to accurately guide me to the best cusine that Atlanta has to offer.

The 2002/03 edition has 95% of the best restaurants in Atlanta (when compared against the culture Atlanta magazine "Jezebel" in their July '100 Best Restaurants of 2002' edition). Scoring 1-30 in each category (food, decor, service) a restaurant's top score in each category can be 30. The Ritz-Carlton Dining Room, Buckhead scored 28, 27, 28 . . . the highest score in Atlanta. The remaining 449 restaurants in this guide have a flagship to follow.

One of the most useful features is the guide's "Top Rating" sections: Top Food by Cuisine, Best Buys, Most Popular, Top Outdoor, Top Romantic, Top Views, etc.

This is a very good pocket guide and, if there is a downside, it is the lack of maps. Two small maps are what you get to cover 450 restaurants. Actually, these two maps only list the 42 most popular restaurants. Another area that may disappoint some is the terse 50 word description for each restaurant, a brief narrative that fails to mention any outstanding restaurant dishes.

If you are looking for a fuller restaurant description, I commend the "Atlanta Restaurant Guide" by Christiane Lauterbach. Though dated (1996), it is a good guide to also have, but both are guides used together would be best. Zagat has been, and is, the best overall dining guide for Atlanta. Recommended!
